The help I need is out there, yet

There are so many resources out there to help validate many of my points. They may not completely line up with my exact wailing that we need new parties and new leadership, yet they are out there.

You may or may not remember a television ad where some guy is on a deserted island. He is scraggly looking with unkept long hair and beard like he had been there awhile. It is the typical tropical island, there are palm trees all along the shore waving in the breeze, the waves are rolling onto the not white sand, but very light tan sand beach, he has written large letters into the sand either saying help or SOS I cannot remember exactly and he is sitting next to a fire looking desperate or lost. And if you are so inclined you might feel the heat of the fire or smell the salt water in the air. As he is sitting by the fire he hears a helicopter and goes running out to the beach waving his arms all excited. The scene cuts to him riding in the helicopter and he asks how did they find him or something similar and the lady flying says, oh we are with the resort on the other side of the island.

Or another words what he needed was there all along, he just didn’t explore enough. I am not quite that far removed as him because I do read and watch Youtube videos on all sorts of topics, yet I never add these references or points they make to strengthen or as said above validate what I believe is needed.

The reason I finally bring this up and you guessed it I plan on referencing more books, articles, Youtube videos, or whatever else I find that leads to me to validating my points and thoughts.

Now all of these references may not line up exactly with my views yet they show that more and more and not just recently people are looking for something different than what the Democrats and Republicans have been offering for decades and I do mean decades. True it was in the background maybe because people would relegate the need for change with earlier iterations of conspiracy theories or other fringe ideas. Yet people were making honest discussions of the failure of our two major parties. And this was in other areas of society also.

Some of the frustration of people eventually led to the rise of Donald Trump. Now some people consider Trump a bit stupid. They are idiots. He is not a genius, yet he certainly understood or heard what people were saying they needed or wanted and found a way to align it with what he wanted. Now that is a worn out argument so I will move on. Or maybe it isn’t because the Democrats cannot seem to grasp that yet.  I will move on though.

My reference for today is a book titled Hate, Inc. by Matt Taibbi. This book focuses primarily on the media. He is a well respected author and writer and leans more to the left. Or he has written primarily for left leaning publications like Rolling Stone. And apparently the book originally was written on Substack. He acknowledges this in the first two sentences of the introduction. He goes on to describe how the book evolved and what the reader can expect either from the evolution he made or if a new reader, as I was when I first read the book, what the book wants to address.

The subtitle of the book better explains why it is important to my arguments, “Why today’s media makes us despise one another”. This book explores the evolution of both left wing and right wing media creating an environment that pits us against the other side. Some liberals may say this is all because of Fox News, yet Mr. Taibbi shows us this has been developing long before Fox News came about. And he also breaks down that it is both sides of the media using some of the same techniques to divide us for their readers to maintain a loyalty to their brand. There is a substantial amount of history of the media over the last few decades and if you are not a regular member of the press you might get lost in the weeds of his references. Still he spells out what has happened and most readers can easily see what has developed over time, who are some of the culprits and make sense of his observations and reflections.

I am not going to write a book review on it, even though I could. This just plays into my wheel house so much so that I could not make an objective review. That wouldn’t be fair to help a reader to determine if this was a book they wanted to read. I am just going to tell you, read the damn book. Every American and maybe a good chunk of the world should. Go to the library and check it out if you don’t want to make him rich by buying it, but read it. We have all felt it, yet we do not want to pull ourselves away from our side because we need our side. Our side validates our beliefs. And as humans beings social animals this is needed. What we also need is to think critically and make decisions based on knowing all sides. This is pointed out in the book, yet I say again, read the damn book. He does a much better job of laying out what is going on than I could in some blog post. This isn’t a recent book yet all his points are still valid and probably the situation is worse than when he wrote.

There is going to be much more to come on using other resources including this book and there will be some podcasts using and on other resources*. Expect one soon.

I hope you continue to have a prosperous and Happy New Year. It is the Chinese New Year this week so do something exciting and celebrate the world.

Cheers

*Why is it all the great writers have the great editors, as always an editor is worth their weight in gold, too bad I have neither.

I’m cravin’ some misbehavin’

It happens to all of us sooner or later, and for someone like me much more than any should.

We start daydreaming, we are cooped up too long, we get caught in the dead of winter and even though the days start to inch longer, we still feel a longing of sorts to get out and do something and not whatever it is we are doing.

In the days of youth spring break dominates the thinking and you got to be careful because some serious misbehaving happens. Other times such as the dog days of summer we look for cooler weather, a change of colors, someplace to sit and enjoy a sunset over a body of water, or even fall sporting events such as the World Series or the start of football.

So it never matters the time, we are always look to another time to shake up our lives.

And this misbehaving can be so many things, for a person stuck at work too long, a long lunch may be tempting; or the mind can ramp things up and vacation days start to hit the synapsis and dance like sparkles of sunlight bouncing of that aforementioned body of water; for a person on a diet it can be a donut; for a religious person it could simply mean skipping morning prayers; or for a lay religious person it might mean treating yourself to what you gave up for lent three weeks in; and speaking of Lent, Mardi Gras may tempt others; sleeping in maybe what a workaholic needs; and actually doing something different is what drives a desire to misbehave.

Some people think misbehaving is bad and yes it can be, yet also it can be good. Our lives are so full of emails at midnight, morning meetings where we drink too much coffee to get through, taking the kids to the emergency room for a broken bone or high fever in the middle of the night, or the car not starting or a tire is flat when you are running late to get somewhere.

Yet no matter what goes on, life is too short to continually try to make it perfect, to assert our control over events, to rely on others to make us happy or to wake up and feel completely out of control. We need moments of getaway. And as much as we may like a five star hotel, sometimes a simple hike down an old city trail can be a joy, yet whatever it is, it needs to be done.

There is the saying all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and it is so true. Sure sometimes a person’s circumstances require that said person has to work all the time and that is sad, truly sad. Somehow we need to treat each other with respect and compassion that a person should not fall into such a dreary or dreadful life. Life on earth is a joy and everyone should have the opportunity to experience it. We are given a few fleeting moments on a beautiful planet so no one should be sentenced to a painful life. Unfortunately it does happen so always be open to share with someone your time, thoughts, help or resources to give someone “a break”.

So go misbehave every once and awhile yet just remember, if all work makes Jack a dull boy, then all play makes Jack one heck of a menace. We do have our responsibilities. Do we want to feel accomplished and left out though? Learn to mix things up, find new friends, new experiences, see new places and especially learn to smile spontaneously. So go crave to misbehave today (or tomorrow).

Life doesn’t always have to be earth shattering.

Cheers

The real reason for the TikTok ban, censorship is more monstrous than you think, and other assorted nightmares

Opportunity.

Opportunity is the real reason for the TikTok ban. Many say and partially rightfully so that is competition. The American social media companies want to get rid of TikTok because it is competition to them and eating into their market share, profits etc, however, if you sit back and think about it, Tik Tok gives millions of people opportunity that people do not have in other areas.

The plutocrats or oligarchs, or whatever you want to call them, want to control the world, yet if there are avenues for millions of people to have an opportunity that is a threat to them. If people can be successful in areas they cannot control this is a threat to them. And as we know, the rulers do not like threats to their rule. So what we are really looking for to replace TikTok is not just another medium, but one that opens up doors for people to be successful on their own. And so much so that it threatens the elite because opportunity is what keeps us thriving as a populace.

So on way too many occasions I go out and make comments, snarky comments etc on other social media platforms or on the comment boards to news articles and so on. What I am finding is the infamous “community guidelines” or just “X” in general are out of hand. I cannot prove my “X” example, but I have been putting critical comments on “X” about Musk and Trump and then if I go back to check what I have put on there, those what use to be tweets have disappeared. Unfortunately I have not taken screen shots of the original post, but I am seeing a few of my posts not show up under a search for me. I don’t normally search for my stuff, yet I had posted a critical comment and then I went back to edit it or make a comment to it and couldn’t find it so it got me checking other posts. I feel some are missing.

Second the “community guidelines” are seriously out of hand. I entered this comment on a story:

We need new parties or independents to gain control of the House just to reset the power structure and give more power back to the people.

I copied the comment verbatim onto a word document  when I got back the message it violated the community guidelines for the site. Seriously I tried it twice and received the same message about violated the policy. How on God’s green earth does the above comment violate anything. There are no derogatory or vulgar words, no hate speech, no what?????? Please read this again and let me know if I am missing something. Otherwise this is serious censorship at a whole new level. I understand a site can create their own rules, but this???

And with Trump’s second term upon us, do we fear the worst? Or is it all bluster and nothing gets done. The acquiescence of Republicans towards him is more than pathetic, but what really burns me is his cabinet. Only loyalists to a fault and with many of them very wealthy it is beyond the pale that this government represents anything other than a grab of greed and power for a very select few individuals. And add in Trump and the rest of the Republicans have bad public policy as a goal, what is the average Joe and Jane supposed to do. And as David Bowie once sang, but even more relevant today: scary monsters, super creeps, keep me running, running scared.

Hopefully I am wrong, but I am not too thrilled about the next four years, especially since the clueless Democrats still haven’t figured out what hit them.
