It is the United States in 2020, but

why does it feel like 1920?

Why is it a country that can lead the world in space exploration, lead the world in failing its people as a developed nation? We have launched people into space for 60 years, yet we cannot completely embrace the respect of all people no matter race creed or color.

Most of us are not extremists on the far right or left, most of us respect each other, most of us prefer to live our lives doing what is right, most of us do not want to see our leaders fail us, our police fail us, our neighbors fail us, yet most of us stay silent year over year and let the extremes and the hate rule the noise of this country.

The police is not the enemy, some individual police officers are failing our communities, but they are not the police overall. The city leaders do need to address problems within the ranks of their forces, yet we as a community also need to address the issues within our communities. Racism is birthed from ignorance and hate and fear. It is not natural. We are not born prejudice. It is a learned trait.

So again how can we lead in so many ways and fail in the most basic of ways?

It is 2020 on this planet, it is 2020 in the United States, why does it not feel like it?

I usually rant and rave about how the elites are failing us, the Democrats are failing us, the Republicans are failing us, but today I need to rant and rave at myself and the majority of us who sit at home and complain and do not get involved in working to address the most basic value of just respecting each other, all of us as each other.

Congratulations to NASA and SpaceX for their successful launch and bringing the United States back to leading the exploration of space and hopefully so much more.

One day hopefully we can thank ourselves for just doing what is right even though it should be so natural we shouldn’t have to make it a celebration, but we may have to someday.

For those feeling anger and frustration, please protest peacefully, you have every right. Then do not give up and help us all sit down and begin the process of rooting out the evil of this hate that causes your pain.

There are too many good people in this country to let the ugly rule, yet we must do our part to prevent them from controlling the conversation. In that, we are not doing our part. It is past time to address ourselves in this matter.

Happy Memorial Day

Of course we celebrate everyone who has served our country, yet Memorial Day is the day we celebrate those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

And in my family there are many who have served or are serving, but with Memorial Day in mind I want to recognize my great uncle who was in the Navy and passed away during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Take care all and many thanks to all those who have given it all for our country. Let us remember their sacrifices this weekend and every day.

I pray for the surgeon

Trump and his overly religious following of him are a cancer on our society there is no doubt. And yet the Democrats cluelessly think just by beating him in November things will get better. Of course we all worry about the election even being conducted or conducted openly or fairly such as to the fears Trump as created.

Due to the devout belief that Trump is something extraordinary or the chosen one or the greatest President ever or the most maligned President ever or whatever amongst a very large portion of the body politic gives rise to the fear Trump leaving office is going to be a nightmare. Add in the right wing extremists who really don’t care about Trump, but somehow still love him so they can scream about all the enemies they perceive are attacking their rights or whatever madness is in their heads and you can see the nightmare grow. Toss in a few Russian disinformation campaign workers and well the next 6 months or so are going to be a massive dip into uncharted territory.

Basically we somehow must rid ourselves of one of the worst political cancers this country has faced with extreme caution. Imagine a deadly tumor resting right on the spot where the spine meets the brain or the brain stem. And it has to be surgically removed or the patient (our country) will die or become paralyzed. Yet the surgery it self could paralyze or kill the patient. This is where we are right now. And somehow or another people think Joe Biden is the surgeon we need. Add on the fact this cancer is being fueled by a portion of the body politic, more specifically some Republican Senators, some pundits, extremists, conspiracy theorists and certain elements of the one percenters that is suffering severe DNA damage that just adds or fuels this growing cancer.

Somehow in the next 6 months the general body politic, us the people in large mass, need to find someone we can respect that can overcome the immense amount of hate that will be generated by the current tumor to stay attached to our brain stem. Joe Biden will not be able to come into office and slay this tumor. It will engulf his Presidency as the Trump base never accept any election that doesn’t re elect Trump. No, the person we need would have to be someone that they have no way to attribute any of their hate. And it has to be someone that can garner enough respect across the board to quell broad based dissonance and offer a steady hand to slowly bring some of Trump’s base back to the general body politic and start moving extremism back to the end of the road.

The tumor will destroy the Constitution and hence the country. There may be something called the United States of America, but the great country this name once represented will be long gone.

Joe Biden saying he will not pardon Trump is one example he is not the surgeon we need. This is inflammatory to his base and feeds the hate generated by the tumor to stay alive eating away at our brain stem (country and Constitution).

The chore is to find someone that can get on the ballot either as an independent or somehow we have a brokered Democrat convention that nominates someone that is well known, but so outside the Democratic norm that the machine that fuels the tumor cannot find ways to attack successfully. Their hate fueled DNA would be left helpless and just a bunch of noise with no substance.

This country is in uncharted waters and we need a Captain with a steady hand on the wheel, a willingness to test the new waters, and can guide us through the multiple storms of a pandemic, political turmoil, domestic upheaval, financial malaise, foreign interference and who knows what else. No small feat I must admit.

I love our country, just a bit worried right now

May I borrow a cup of optimism anyone?

The vacuum cleaner example: or why Trump supporters got it right (sort of) and why they are completely wrong

Remember when they sold us the idea that the original NAFTA would create a middle class in Mexico. Instead it is one part of the equation the multi nationals used to weaken our middle class.

And yes I am about to say this: remember back in the day...

Years ago we had a more diverse wealth base. There were many manufacturers, different retail companies, food was a bit more local and accessible through real farmers markets, shops and local butchers, unions protected the rights of workers, people earned enough to live within their means and products worked. If not, you took them to a local repair shop. Clothes were made of natural fabrics like cotton and wool. Shoes were made of leather and there were shoe repair shops. And there were multitudes of local businesses from restaurants to dry cleaners to barbers to carpenters to plumbers to much more. Utilities were considered safe stocks and you owned them to have dividend income. Mutual funds helped the middle class save and Wall Street didn’t control the entire business world.

Over the last fifty years all that has changed and not one bit of it for the common good. Sure a few people are extremely richer, yet you make less comparatively and goods are sold cheaply with no expectation that they are going to work.

You go to one of the few retailers left to buy a vacuum cleaner made of plastic from labor extremely underpaid from across the world so the profits can be higher for the few. And the vacuum cleaner may work two years, maybe. You can buy some type of insurance that will protect you in case something goes wrong because things are so cheap and they make so much money from making and selling them that replacing this crap with an insurance policy, that makes someone else fantastically richer than you, is cheaper than manufacturing something that will last or if it doesn’t they could maintain a repair shop to fix it so you can keep it for ten years.

So instead of more people engaged in the whole of society with the production and maintenance of products, the multi nationals found a way to consume competition, throw American labor under the bus, and do everything in their power to weaken to destroy the American middle class so they won’t rise up and elect people to prevent them from this economic oligarchy. And unfortunately we let them do this to us.

So the Trump supporters who want manufacturing to come back to America and want jobs for Americans are correct. This would be good. There is more to this than just than this conjunction, but that is the base of the base thought.

So they are right, but completely wrong. We cannot live in the past. The struggle is to bring jobs back to Americans, but not through isolationism.

It is through embracing the 21st century and new technologies and industries. And by doing this we should simultaneously rebuild local economies. We need more competition within America. We need to bring back many of the service industries to local ownership to rebuild the wealth throughout America.

We live in a global world and that will not change. The change is how do we as Americans rebuild our economy for the 21st century. How do we rebuild a large middle and working class, support the local businesses so the upper middle class prospers in their community instead of being corporate lackeys making a higher salary than everyone else? Yes earning money can be good, but if you are only being offered a bit more than others then you are only a serf with more stuff, but you do not have real ownership or control of your life. You may lie to yourself that you do because you have a stock portfolio, but you do not. You are still at the beck and call of your corporate overlords. Think not, then why are you answering emails at 10 pm? Why do you let your work life so permeate your home life that there is no difference?

It is one thing to own a family business and work many hours to help it flourish. It is another to work excessive hours that allows a very small percentage of people to make extraordinary amounts of money and your job is dependent on their whims. Sure we do need many people to work in upper management because with globalization we will have some large companies. That is part of our lives, but it not should be the dominant part of our lives and our economy.

When wealth is more diverse, when more people are invested into making their local economy strong, when they have a say in local politics much more is done for the common good. When your life is dependent on people you have no connection with, when your livelihood is so disconnected from your environment, you have less interest in your local environment, you become disconnected from the whole of your local community and hence have no desire to become involved. When the plant you work for is local or when the CEO of your company is someone you know or can access or when most of your goods and services comes from within or near your community you pay more attention to what affects your community.

Is this idealistic? No, right now though it is a struggle to bring to fruition. And so when the Trump supporters say we need to bring back manufacturing to America they lose sight of what that means in the 21st century. They need to allow change, not prevent it. They need to become more involved with change in their community and supporting the growth of bringing back home the basics of life. The reliance on multinationals from agriculture to simple products such as vacuum cleaners has hurt us in more ways than one.

There are some things that will need large corporations. Cars for example would struggle in a local economy. Even manufacturing of most house hold products would struggle in a local economy, but if built here with quality or even overseas with quality, but the product was supported locally it helps the local economy. We still have car dealerships and car repair shops and people do well in these businesses so why can’t we apply this to all manufactured goods?

Anyway a household good built with quality in mind where workers are paid a decent wage use to happen in America and things were good. And this could happen again if the right people decided it could happen. We would need to change who represents us, we could use a major infrastructure overhaul to repair what needs to be repaired and to stage what the 21st century will bring us in needs, and we need to change our attitudes towards moving forward rather than sitting around waiting for the next catastrophe. We got one now so it is a  good time to plan for what our country will look like afterwards. The one thing we don’t need is billionaires and elitists telling us and our Congress that if they don’t make more billions then things are bad. Quite frankly a few hundred million is not a bad thing, so why do they need more. It is their misconception of their worth to society and their greed that hampers society.

And I could use a well built vacuum cleaner and I will pay extra for it, because outside of changing the belts or cleaning a clogged tube I cannot do much more and I am tired of buying this crap every couple of years or being forced to spend inordinate amounts of money on some type of product insurance. Give me the damn quality over this crap. Convenience can be good, but at most points a little effort is better.

For a side note here is a human interest story. I knew a person who flew bombers over Germany in World War II. Eventually he became part of the upper middle class as a pilot flying commercial jets. He settled down and had a TV. He would take it to the local repair shop. The person that ran the shop was a young man in Germany in the 1940's who survived the bombings of the pilot. There could have been a reason for hate, instead they became friends and had mutual respect for each other as human beings. And each of them was a contributor to what worked for this country economically. This is the America we should live in, where people of all walks of life know each other, engage with each other and respect each other. Support your local worker and your local business and you will do more to support America than the lies of corporate America.

Cheers

Pardon me, your hypocrisy is showing

Somebody has probably said that before, but it applies to the following scenario going on with our so called Republicans fighting for our rights.

Yes we have people who cannot for the life of them wear a mask and treat people with a little respect, oh no, that is taking away my rights so I have to get my gun and march around yelling and screaming that my livelihood has been taken away because people want to be safe, uh those horrible people, but heck no I cannot have patience for a few months to save lives, by God you are taking away my rights.

You know these people are the infamous crisis actors or so ignorant it is more than sad because our illustrious Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to allow warrant less searches for our browser history. Now this is stomping on our actual rights at the highest reaches of our Constitution. Did any of these citizens so worried about their rights being taken away show up at D.C. today? Do we have armed masked men protesting and storming the Senate Building today? Of course not, because these wondrous protectors of our rights are a bunch of frauds and the fact that McConnell is getting away with this travesty and the majority of Senators are letting him show how far down the rabbit hole we have fallen.

The hypocrisy being displayed in our country is one reason we are experiencing the worst of this pandemic of all the developed nations. The criminals and the ignorant are in charge. A person can become so mad they can’t see or type straight. Sheesh

God save the Constitution, the Constitution is dying. And it is becoming a very ugly pathetic death at that.

Just how far down are they willing to go?

Let’s make sure we understand that not every Trump follower, especially in the beginning, is an alt right fanatic, Russian troll, long time anti government conspiracist, or racist. Many actually were hard working Americans whose lives had turned been turned into shams by the one percent supporting Fox News.

Fox News spent years telling their audience that there were hundreds of people out to get them. After years of watching, well it does start to seep into the synopsis of any brain. They started watching because “main stream media” had been talking down to them for years. They were looking for someone to remind them they were worth something. Fox News cultivated these Americans convincing them that supporting corporate America’s agenda was the best thing for them. They called it conservatism and convinced them that people who attacked this version of conservatism were un-Americans and eventually they became the enemy. The Fox News Audience didn’t get to hear a contrarian voice, it was all anyone who didn’t support our agenda was anti everything good about this country.

Around 2010 or 2011 Trump started making appearances on Fox. He unfortunately started striking a chord with people on the fringe of these hard working Americans and they gave Fox the feedback loop they needed to continue to support Trump through the birther lies. And then Trump found out people believe his crap and they loved it and therefore him. He ate it up.

So he runs for President with a small groundswell of Americans looking for a  hero to save them from the horrible people in D. C who didn’t understand them. (this last part was true, the two parties at the national level had lost touch of main street many years beforehand) and then add in emboldened nuts and racists to create enough votes to elect Trump.

Now most of you already know this abbreviated history. And you know they continued for the first three years to keep going further and further down the rabbit hole with Trump. Now we are left with the ultimate questions. How deep down this hole will they go? Or is there still enough daylight in the hole that can reach down to help the majority of these people find their way back up?

We are at the crossroads of the question does the paid rebels storming state capitol buildings, the talk show hosts, and all the conspiracists block out the daylight for the average Trump supporter that they fall too deep into the hole and this wonderful experiment of representative government suffer for years? Or will something happen and daylight breaks through the cover and we pull enough back up to save our country? Yes, we are really at this point.

Yes Barr working to get Flynn off is bad, the EPA being decimated is bad, the paid actors storming capitols is bad, people dying from COVID 19 is horrible, and I hate making these deaths less important than the one fact that if we do not stop Trump and everything he is doing to this country then the last 250 + years of slow evolution, even with setbacks and crimes throughout our history we were slowly evolving into something special as a nation. All this is about to be thrown into a new swamp of the complete denigration of the human experience. And it will be virtually impossible to drain. Lets be positive and say it can, but the work to drain this swamp will be enormous.

We are facing a new evil. Mankind has conquered evil before, but this time it has permeated the very people who would help defeat it and the mask covering this evil is very good. Too many people are deceived. Many times people are downtrodden so it is hard to fight off the evil. This time the mask covers the horror unfolding before us to some people. And the rest of us who see this happening are not doing enough to stop this madness.

We need to speak out in mass. We need to create our own virtual storming of the capitols to show we are aware of what they are doing, but we are also smart enough to take care of ourselves. Show the government that reason and common sense still mean something to the masses. And more importantly that we will not be fodder to demagoguery, greed, hate, ignorance and we expect us has humans to be better.

And I have thought of cute ideas to protest with so to speak. I thought people should all go to their State Capitol lie down 6 feet apart from each other with a rose or other flower all at the same time. And hopefully thousands or ten of thousands would show up and circle the building, then spread out throw the streets of their capital city all lying down for a designated time protesting both the unnecessary deaths of COVID 19 because we are opening up too early and the coming death of democracy if our government lets the small overly vocal extremists become the voice of this country.

The extreme are a tough lot to beat. They are more dedicated than the average person who worries more about food on the table and education for their children than protesting against extremism. Yet these are the people who are needed to make a statement more so than ever. People from all walks of life could come and lie down for the cause.

Yet I am no social influencer, no celebrity, no politician, no extremist for moderation to know how to inspire people to show up. Our voices need to be heard in dramatic ways or we are about to go out with a resoundingly quiet whisper and along with it the best government humanity has manufactured so far.

Four years ago Trump won because people thought he was going to change the country, unfortunately he is, not just the way most of his average supporters understood. Now we are struggling to bring back the very type of leadership that the Trump supporters wanted to change. Well they were right, we need change. The change though needs to be a dynamic overhaul of our way of thinking, not our way of life. It is the 21st century and we need to dive deep into the future to move humanity forward. We cannot sit on our laurels, we need to make more one small steps for man and giant leaps for mankind. We need to dream, explore, educate ourselves, embrace culture, and we need to care about each other. This should be the change we make in the 21st century.

Time to move forward. Time to find new leadership that looks forward. There are thousands of new ideas to make this a better planet and most of them can even bring jobs and prosperity. Innovation has always been mankind’s best way to enrich mankind. Time we set into place the mechanism of government that allows each of us in our own small ways to flourish, not divide us or separate us . Government should not rule us, but guide us by us electing the right representation for the whole of the country. No one man or party has all the answers. All of us have some of the answers and then putting it all together makes us whole.

As I always say, we need new parties because Trump v. Biden is us heading in two different wrong directions.

Cheers

Thank you Texas Supreme Court

for politicizing justice

Boy those scales sure have gotten heavy on one side

Where is the outrage for the Laredo women? Fortunately for them the revised order does protect them even though you didn’t hear all this Republican outrage for them. Out on bail? hmmm

Go Lincoln Project

I thought the Good Mourning America commercial was a bit exaggerated on some of its visuals, yet it definitely did what we wanted it to do. Trump flipped out and they raised money to do it some more.
And even though they are a bunch of old Republicans, at least they are using somewhat of an independent reference.
I know no one will believe me but on the way to work, I had Arlo Guthrie’s “City of New Orleans” playing in my head as best I could remember it. I came home and saw the ad. Fun times and time to youtube.

“....Good morning America, how are you, don’t you know me I’m your native son   I’m the train they call the City of New Orleans...”

Arlo Guthrie an underrated American treasure

And then Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” came on.

Interesting lyrics from both songs for our interesting times

Paranoia

“Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid“...many thanks to Buffalo Springfield

Scary word paranoia and pun intended, yet we are stuck with being cooped up in our houses listening to John Oliver talk about the NRA and vaccines.

Has it really come down to this?

And I am not against people owning guns. I know many and I mean many responsible gun owners. I also have walked through the Texas Hill Country with a handgun in my pocket (yes I said pocket) in case we ran across rattlesnakes or something. Did I mention we were lit beyond belief at 8am? And were you paying attention? I didn’t say I was a responsible gun owner. In fact, I do not own guns, but I have wasted more bullets than I care to think about.’

Anyway, I like John Oliver and that is scary enough.

Yet here we are today and I mean this with all sincerity; I have to pray that President Trump and a host of Republican Governors are right and it is okay to reopen the country. I do not believe we should. I do not see us as being ready to reopen, but some Governors are reopening their states with Trump’s infamous conditional approval, you know where he gives us the conditions to reopen, but somehow there are tweets to liberate Minnesota and Virginia, etc (he always gives himself an out), anyway, I have to pray they are right and it is okay because if not then thousands to tens of thousands of people will die unnecessarily.  I fear the worst. So, is it paranoia or hey I should jump on the let's go storm the Capitol Building with our guns and demand our states reopen bandwagon just because...well...just because?

There were practical plans that could have been implemented in March so that by the end of May we could have reopened with maybe some control till a vaccine came about. Now? No, let's behave like entitled spoiled brats and not think of our neighbors, but succumb to the one percent’s need for greed. All the people storming the Capitols probably aren’t going to receive any dispensation from the Trump organization when they start dying, but hey they will be considered heroes by him.

Or am I paranoid? Everything is fine, no one is going to die. Corporations will do right by their employees and all the stories of no protective equipment, no sick leave, no accommodations for spacing, etc are all fake news. Hotspots are a figment of my imagination.

So I will pray that everyone I distrust and do not like is right, that I am wrong because otherwise the toll of unnecessary deaths would hang heavy on my heart and I rant against this madness daily. Would it theirs?

No cheers tonight
