And they still won’t have an answer as to why the United
States of America went mad.
They will talk about changing demographics; stagnation in
people’s living standards; political apathy that turns to political distrust
then to political anger; excessive influence by something called one percenters
or the donor class; youth that became disconnected with humanity vis a vie
technology; misguided expectations; excessive debt; idolization of celebrities;
and more. Yet, they will not be right. These topics may be part of the problem,
but the collective madness that permeated the entire country will defy any
logical explanation.
As all good psychologists do, they will want to label this
madness. Even this will fail, the madness is so unique.
The same country that created the world’s greatest economy;
brought forth social changes never before seen in human history in rapid
fashion; reached the cusp of improving the lot of humanity; created and
invented at an outstanding rate; almost destroyed itself in a Civil War that to
prove that all men have inalienable rights; and more. It accomplished so much
in 200 years and was ready to go even further when for some still unexplained
reason fell upon itself in just a few decades. At first the decline was slow,
but accelerated near the end at light speed.
Institution after institution was dismantled by a complete
loss of decorum, belief in what was true disappeared; education was an
afterthought; social interaction was dictated by the devices people used to
interact, no more did they talk, only swarm together in technological hives and
feedback loops that validated their existence and beliefs; human touch
disappeared as these devices claimed every waking moment; civil discourse was
replaced by public hatred; moral high ground became a valley as people shunned
any semblance of a value driven society; greed and fame became symptoms of this
loss of values; everyone blamed others and no one took responsibility either at
the individual level or at the societal level and all this even though the
greatest document mankind had ever written was the foundation of the country’s
very existence. A document that outlined a pragmatic way to live what some
called the Golden Rule, to treat others with the respect they would expect to
be treated by others.
There will be papers, thesis, books, and more, yet there
will not be an answer. The madness was so complete the country collapsed upon
itself in an ugly societal explosion that caused a massive crater in human
existence. The aftershocks spread throughout the planet almost causing a
complete acquiescence to the same madness. It would take decades for the rest
of humanity to be able to stand up once again and move forward. And it would
take decades for people to look back at this madness and come up with the
courage to study it. The fear always being it would reappear, yet mankind
wanted to know. They won’t and their best defense was to run completely from
this madness and live a much simpler life.
I hope I am wrong and we survive our current dehumanization
of the human spirit and move forward again. I truly want us to do better.
Cheers
