Two sensitive topics

I always struggle with why, and I know you have heard people talking about this also, good women or smart women choose bad men. I really struggle as to why this cannot be overcome. Especially in this day and age where there are so many books for women to help them get through “whatever”.

And I begged the question on this one because I think the same reason we have so many pop psychology books for women also is some of the same underlying problems that prevent smart women from making good choices. A person could be simplistic and say this is all to do with insecurity, but at what level.

Many of you in the working world have seen strong women in the work place, but then there personal life is a shambles. So you know they can handle their own, so saying their bad decision making is based on insecurity doesn’t seem to fit the bill. Yet there is something going on that prevents them being able to have solid relationships and this can include with female friends also.

I have read and heard that women need good relationships with their Fathers and I do believe that to be true. Many women that have supportive Dads tend to do better in their social relationships. How much though is based on their relationship with their Dad or does a bad relationship help to foster insecurity on the relationship front?

I didn’t say I was going to have an answer to this topic, but I want to bring it up because I think it is something that needs to be addressed and not through pop psychology books. My Mom read a ton of these and it didn’t do her a damn bit of good.

Or I could say my answer is for women to all go to the mirror and tell themselves they are worthwhile humans, they love themselves, and don’t let anyone disrespect themselves, you know what the books say. Again it sounds good, but women either do not do it or there is more to this problem than meets the eye. I believe the latter.

We need something though. Women are way too abused and forsaken in much of the world. There is nothing that says we should allow this. Even the most literal interpretation of the Bible would suggest women should be treated as an equal to man since woman comes from man (specifically created from the rib). This makes the woman just as much a human as the man, but so many religions and religious people espouse mis-interpretations of the Bible to keep women “in their place” This is obviously wrong.

And in the third world there is much work to be done, but here in the first world if women can learn to make good decisions in their relationships and show themselves self respect this might help to move forward women from all around the world. I think the best example of someone standing up as a women is the girl from Pakistan Malala Yousafzai. Unfortunately now Hollywood has gotten into the act so there will be some distortion.  We do not need to make all young girls try to be her, just try to be themselves. And in trying to be them self we can hopefully they can learn to actually have self respect for them self which I think will lead to them having better relationships. It is a start, but for some reason a very difficult start. And for women worldwide it goes back to the golden rule, due unto others as you would do unto yourself, or love your neighbor as yourself etc….. Yet until we can start having women in the Western world take their lives in their own hands it is going to be difficult for women in the third world. Malala may be a hero, but she is also an outlier and a rare bird. There is more to this discussion and that includes everything from changing many males attitudes to truly addressing world wide problems like human trafficking.  Yet as with everything the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

In case you haven’t figured it out I am from and live in Texas. And yes I have shot guns, many of them, starting at a very young age. I do not own any guns right now and never really have. There have been a few occasions where I have had to carry a gun for at least reasonable purposes. I wonder the thinking of my friends who loaned me one since they were walking and working with me at the time and they had a pretty good idea I am not always the best shot. And they trusted me that I would actually hit the rattle snake if we came upon one while working in the brush instead of their foot.
And I truly believe we need to keep the second amendment along with all the rest of the Bill of Rights and Constitution.

I do believe though there are people out there that have no business carrying guns. And yes this includes the mentally ill, but this isn’t about them. It is about all the crazies out there carrying guns, touting guns rights who truly have no inkling or respect of what a gun represents. And now we have open carry in Texas. This is the last thing we need. A bunch of trumped up pyschos strutting their peacock feathers walking around displaying they are armed. It is these people more than the petty criminal that may make me buy a gun. Not that I would carry it around, but to have at home because God only knows why they think they need to prove to the world they are a “man”.

I fear the day something bad happens and you have all these irrational politicians trying to justify it because they pander to these people’s votes. And you need to know there is a difference between truly responsible gun owners and support for the NRA versus the vocal insanity that has developed over the last few years that is driving some real dangerous thinking.

What good is going to come about of right wing nuts that are self empowered by the open carry legislation thinking that they have all the right answers and at some point forget they are no better than others and become fodder for some political movement that justifies their insanity? Or just in general some whacko person in their 20’s drunk out of their mind trying to “make their point” and some young child ends up in a hospital somewhere or worse.

Oh yeah did you hear there was a shooting outside AT&T Stadium after the Cowboy game. Yeah we are not that far away from some real disasters. And then how do our so called Representatives put this genie back in the bottle.

And what is worse is that the majority of people (gun owners and non gun owners) do not want open carry. This really was pandering to a vocal minority (very vocal) to get votes when even most rational gun owners aren’t that hyped up about open carry. There is this problem that some gun owners backed away from making noise against this group because they feared being ostracized by other gun owners. Yet they knew this wasn’t in anyone’s best interest. I fear too many conservatives are letting themselves be bullied by people calling themselves conservative.  Things just do not bode well.

If some of the people I am speaking about read this, you know they will come out strong against it.

So the world is isn’t perfect, we have problems, and yet we can make it better. It just takes the people who seem to have the most at stake getting involved. What can we do to motivate them?

And you know by now my favorite answer is education, but these issues are more than scholastic education. It always sounds so trivial, but family values and family are important. Some people tend to associate the term family values with the myth of the perfect family in the 50’s, but the reality is we need to remember the importance of what a strong family offers young people growing up. A well rounded educated family is the best foundation we can offer our children and we shouldn’t let it be denigrated by people who think we do not need a value system. So many so called intellectual elitists discount this most fundamental aspect of any society or country because they associate it with people who mis apply what it really means and use it for a political ends instead of helping to keep our society great. This may not be the direct answer to these two topics, but if you really dig down deep it is a great way to prevent problems like this from becoming endemic to us all. I just hope it is not too late. And as always, I am open to positive suggestions to help.

It has been a very warm day here in North Texas even for us so actually looking forward to a bit of fall weather. The State Fair begins its last week so a corny dog needs to be on the menu for us all. Have a great week.

And I added a few pictures of downtown Dallas on my fake facebook page. Details of it are in a previous post.
