The NBA and Checker pieces

As you know I am a major Mavericks fan, yet I am not a fan of the current trade talks. I am of the opinion that if you make a trade it should bring you kings, not just move pieces to move pieces. And yes some of this has to do with the Anthony Davis rumors and some of it is in general.

I saw an article by somebody about potential trades for the Mavs to get Anthony Davis or not even better Holiday. Why? First of all why give up 60% of your starting rotation to get one player even one as good as Davis. Yes you get one “king me” piece but you lose too many pieces to get there. Eventually you lose the checkers match because you just don’t have enough kings, much less pieces all together. With the right strategy you can overcome the “king me” piece if you play all your players well and work to get the true crown. I think it would be nice to have Davis, but at what cost. Pros and cons people, pros and cons. I know our roster isn’t the best out there, yet it is very good. I say over and over again they are underperforming and that is Carlisle’s fault. I would prefer he figure it out, (I still like him as our coach) and make a serious run this year as is.

We can worry about next year, next year. And I know we do not have the best history in free agency, but with free agency we have the chance to add without too much subtraction even if we keep most of what we have and pick up one major piece. I also wish we kept our draft pick for next year also, but that is water under the bridge now. And yes keep Dennis Smith Jr too. DSJ and Doncic can be a productive backcourt. It may not happen overnight, but the GS Warriors didn’t become champions the first year Curry and Thompson played together. Yes, they had more cohesiveness going in, but still give the kids time. Our bench is solid, so a major addition with keeping DSJ, Doncic, possibly Barnes and/or Jordan and Matthews with team friendly contracts to a small degree then add a top of the line two way shooting guard and/or power forward possibly only losing one or two of the above is better long term management. Still means playing better this year is our best bet for now. Unless some trade comes along that is so tilted in the Mavs favor, do not do anything. Trading pieces to trade pieces mid year without a substantial and significant upgrade is a waste of time. Remember the Rondo trade????????? And make sure it is significant and substantial period.

Also I saw they fined Anthony Davis because of this trade talk. I think maybe the league should look at banning or suspending the agent. On the surface it seems he may be involved with a bit of tampering and if AD goes to LA, wow… I would definitely think the possibility of him being banned should be considered.  At the very least a long suspension. The NBA needs to stand up for their future and all 30 teams. The fans are the reason for Pro Sports so all the fans deserve a chance to cheer for a championship. I understand agents are to work for their clients, yet for the good of the whole game the NBA has to manage its product.

On a completely separate note. People always complain about jury duty, don’t want the hassle etc and are always looking for an out when they are called. I have one piece of advice. Read your local news thoroughly on a regular basis. Just do it. For reasons I cannot explain this would have worked for a whole jury panel if they had been paying attention to the news locally over the last few years. There are people involved I like so I won’t say more, but heed my advice, even small stories can pay big dividends.

We know it is crazy, but did we know it is this crazy

Over the weekend the better half told me that over 400 people have registered to run for President in 2020. I already thought the number of Democrats saying they are running or thinking about it was too much. Now I am hit with the over 400 number. Sheesh!

She said I should run. I hadn’t realized she was applying to go on Comedy Central. Seriously though I guess I could. The only thing holding me back are one of three things: I am not a narcissist, I am not that ambitious/power hungry, or generally I am pretty lazy. It is definitely one of these three items.

And on a more practical note, this is why we need campaign reform. Trump immediately filed to run in 2020 when he won in 2016. Just the number of Democrats joining the fray is more than a bit much. No one and I mean no one should be able to even explore publicly running until January of the election year. Primaries start in April and run through June. And this might cause some States some burdens to start this change, but after a couple of election cycles they should have it down.  The Conventions in August with a moratorium on campaign ads and appearances in July and after the Conventions till Labor Day. At this point they could campaign in earnest. And in my opinion, this is still too much, but at least it might bring the body politic some respite from this constant madness. And we should shorten the elections for other offices too. I have previously posted a more detailed idea for campaign reform, but after hearing the better half blurt the above information, I had to reinforce the idea of reigning in this madness.

The reform also goes along with campaign finance reform, creating legislation that overturns Citizens United, and lobbying reform. I have previously posted ideas on all this madness, but every now and then you feel you have to run screaming through your own blog, enough is enough!

Okay the shutdown is over, what next

As you can expect, my what next is it is time for Congress to really step up. Instead of playing politics for the next three weeks, develop real immigration reform, include real border security reform, and put something on the President’s desk he would be a fool not to sign.

Or I will even take the President doing something that would make Congress a fool for not passing it.

Either way, do something real.

I am very happy for the Federal workers and they should have never been put in the position they were, but this was because Congress hasn’t done anything for years. Presidents come and go, but good God look at some of the people in Congress. They are older than Methuselah. So, as I always say we need new major parties to shake things up at the very least and/or do something to start solving our Country’s issues. People keep saying we need term limits. In my opinion this is not the answer, this is a band aid. We, as citizens of a representative republic, have a responsibility to ourselves and our country. Maybe because I grew up with the famous quote “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” I believe it is up to us to do better and more specifically elect better people to represent us.

So, who knows what the next three weeks will bring, yet I am not holding my breath Congress is up to the task, much less the President?

And I am still hung up on the Mavericks under performing in my opinion this year. They have good players and are a team that should be better as a whole than the sum of their parts. Even though they won the last two games, they have much work to do. And again, I think Carlisle is not motivating the team to achieve what they can. He needs to push the veterans to work with Smith, Jr. and Luka, move the ball around and attack, attack, attack on offense. Just my humble opinion.

A bit of Dallas Sports, politics and more incomplete shutdown comments

I will start with the Sports since the Mavs are playing tonight and this is about the Mavs. I am about to commit minor sacrilege.  Coach Carlisle doesn’t move this team anymore. I still think he knows more about the xs and os and coaching in general, but I fear he is not motivating the team. I do not know if we need a new coach or maybe a fire breathing assistant coach, but the team doesn’t seem to be motivated to play the whole 48 minutes. I think if they play hard the whole game they would win more. Yet it seems more and more they go for a stretch and play well then just coast or let the other team grab the momentum and run away with it.

In my opinion the Mavs are a better team than their record. They are a team that is greater than the sum of their parts, so they need to play well with intensity, but when they do, they look really good. Super frustrating to watch. And I think Carlisle is just not pushing the right buttons and this isn’t about the DSJ thing, but that is just a symptom of the problem facing Coach Carlisle. Hopefully I am wrong, and they just need to get some momentum going to right this ship.

And I jumped out on Trump’s speech the other day and one comment I made was the Democrats will eventually need to present something new to grab the momentum with the body politic of the U.S.  I still think this is true. They can get by for a bit longer with their rhetoric, but sooner or later they must sound like they can govern, or people will get tired. Much of the pretentious left didn’t grade Trump’s speech very high which is expected, but he came out and did something. Most people do not follow the details so saying he is still holding the workers hostage by saying he is just giving back what he took away may work, but action speaks louder than words. The Dems better quit acting insulted and start rolling up their sleeves and start working. The body politic is very fickle.

And I double dog dare anyone to come up with a plan. I outlined one recently. Can the Dems or the Reps get creative and practical? I doubt it, but at least I tried, and my ideas were not that radical, somewhat mainstream except for one I am holding back because many practical people would flat out run away if heard, yet if I could find a way to open some minds before presenting, I might try.

And McConnell says he is going to bring two votes to the Senate floor and let the Senate decide. I cannot wait till this happens. If the vote without the wall wins the larger majority, Trump’s talking heads will explode and say all manor of derision. Yet if we get the push back till February vote, then the Dems must put pen to paper and show the world they can do something. And if they don’t then Trump can regain some ground. Not much, but some. I do not like him getting any kudos, but he can yell much on he is compromising even though in reality he isn’t. The pretentious left can belittle Trump all they want, but if they want to win in 2020 it will take more.

Trump hits hard serve (speech on 01/19/19)

The President just finished speaking and I am not going to try and break down the details. I do want to say he sounded Presidential and like he had a plan. Again, I do not know about the details and their viability, but for people who do not make a living developing public policy he sounded good. There will be partisanship, but the Democrats better come up with another plan now.

President Trump may see a pick up in poll numbers with this proposal because he did something. I have been saying all week on other formats the Democrats need to present a plan and they should have beat him to the punch. They didn’t and now some of the blame for the continuation of the shut-down will fall on them. Mark my words. So do they have a strong return prepared?

And on a general note, why is it only Dems and Reps can speak to the Country. Why can’t we have an independent voice given the same amount of airtime as the Dems and Reps. Neither party has a significant majority in the country and by and large independents make up a significant portion of the country. I know it would be a logistical nightmare to figure out who can speak for independents, but I think we should sue for equal time.  Just a thought moving forward.

Cheers

Border Wall: I’ll give Trump one, and then another

Maybe Trump has a plan for the border wall. I will give him the opportunity to espouse it. And I hope he takes it. Maybe he should spend time explaining to the independents and undecideds how his border wall fits into the big picture. Maybe he can give us a comprehensive immigration reform package along with it. All in all he should.

So, Mr. President to help you give us a plan I will frame some ideas I have. Feel free to run with them.

Immigration reform has popped up as an issue infrequently, yet enough times to actually mean something to the political body of these United States. And we really do need reform. For example, have you seen how many different types of cards immigrants, refugees, temporary workers, permanent residents, temporary residents are handed out by the State Department in general. And it breaks down into subtypes for some of these categories. Once you receive one card for residence the immigrant works their way through hoops to become either a permanent resident or possibly even a citizen.
If you are curious, here are a few websites you would need to research to get started.

And this is just a walk through of various sites a person would have to navigate if they want to come here. And by no means is this everything. Do the internet search.

Consolidating just some of this process will be helpful to people wanting to come here, yet it would also be helpful to the people who must manage this program.

And then you need to manage the different types of groups, individuals, refugees, workers students, tourists, asylum seekers, people who want to live here and become citizens.

So as part of this process lets break down some of the categories and talk about what we want to do with each group and afterwards discuss border security. The “Wall” in your parlance Mr. President.

This is not an all-inclusive solution for all problems discussion. This is a rough draft of some ideas our Congress and you should be developing instead of hacks like me.

I think we can agree many people want to come here and live, hopefully experiencing the greatness of our country and the Constitution. We want to grant this opportunity to people who want to come here and contribute.  Our nation is great because of the diverse groups of people who have migrated here, found success, and raised families instilling in them the virtues and values upon which we are founded.

Do we make it harder than before to become a citizen to maybe limit the number of people entering our country? Do we open up more? I think that is a question our Representatives need to ask their constituents to get a feel.  And then bring their answers to DC to begin the process of the whole reform.

Procedurally it must be easier. We should break down the categories into:
People applying for permanent residence and/or citizenship should have the same criteria, same application, and well same red tape. And right now this is pretty similar. The goal becomes how stringent do we make the qualifications to apply.  One card, one process, one group with our government to manage them and keep track of them.

The next group(s) get a bit trickier. Let’s make refugees and asylum seekers the second priority. Why? I think we need to define what we consider potential eligible refugees and asylum seekers in advance.  We lay out the criteria in general and so anytime there is a crisis around the world, our State Department can apply to Congress for people under this situation to become eligible to apply. The process becomes the same no matter where they come from once the situation is pronounced to meet the criteria. Every single person from everywhere gets the same card, has the same restrictions, must follow the same rules, and must contribute to finding a solution to get them back to their country of origin. We do not have to and maybe we shouldn’t offer blanket citizenship or permanent residents to a refugees at all. They can eventually apply via the process determined for residency, but have to meet the criteria established with the first group above. And each year the State Department would come to Congress and prove there is still a need for the group in question to still fit under refugee or asylum seeker status. Congress keeps passing laws for all sorts of situations. We need to have one shoe to fit all feet so to speak. And have it reviewed every year. And with predetermined criteria built into the system, this annual process should be somewhat cookie cutter and also allows flexibility throughout the year when a crisis develops. Once a scenario is determined to be safe again, our State Department begins the process of repatriating the refugees. Yes, this will incur some tax payer expense, but allows the government to better manage the flow of people becoming citizens in general and people overstaying their time. More on this when I discuss border security.

The third major group is temporary workers. And this category encompasses a wide range of possible applicants, yet the same procedural philosophy can be applied. All people wanting to be a temporary worker uses the same application, goes through the same sub-group within our government, follows the same rules and restrictions as all within this group, and has an exit strategy with one exception which I will come to. The rules here apply to anyone wanting to work here either on a short or long term basis. The only different group would be people who work here year in and year out for seasonal or contracted work, yet go home for part of the year. They follow all other rules except they do not have an exit time frame. In days gone by, the term migrant farm workers might come to mine, yet we would be a bit more expansive. The exit time frame can be years from application, yet they are not here to become citizens or permanent residents and only for those hired by companies for job specific purposes. Here are some proposed rules for their employment. First there is modified minimum wage requirements. And this is especially important for the seasonal or temporary permanent workers. It applies to all though. Second, they do not pay income taxes as we know it. Instead they would pay fees based on their income. It would work like our graduated income tax is suppose to work. Income tax is another disaster conversation for another day. I wish people would remember there is a Constitutional Amendment (16) around this topic. For now though I propose a graduated fee for working here on a temporary basis. This fee is withheld from workers paychecks and is used to help fund the Immigration policies, procedures, and personnel the government manages. It isn’t the full budget for immigration, yet helps to offset the costs of the overall program.  There are no forms to fill out like a 1040, no refunds, no extra pay at end of year, it is an amount determined as a graduated percentage by the amount of pay. And if pay varies, so does the amount withheld. Also a small portion can be set aside to help employers pay workman’s compensation which also has limited benefits, yet allows the temporary worker full medical coverage for injuries on the job. They do not pay into or earn social security. They do not receive unemployment benefits and if there job tenure ends early they still need to leave early. Employers have three responsibilities, one if they hire illegals fines are much higher than they are now and possible jail time could be explored, two, they must report if the employee is no longer working to the appropriate government group and give last address, contact and family info known to them.  A 2b would be they need to update the temporary workers info regularly, and three they make sure they comply with fee withholding and sending to the government. Enforcement comes from the fees collected by the employers.

Next group is student visas. This can be real cut and dry. I am open about them being allowed part time employment while students, but face same rules as the temporary workers for the employment. Second the school is responsible for their information being updated with the government once they graduate or leave school. They can apply to go to a different school, but that must be approved with the same process as their original application to study here. The cannot arbitrarily change schools.

There are other categories, but this is a good over view of what can be done, still allow immigrants, yet manage our resources. And if you didn’t catch it, each category has its own subgroup within the State Department’s umbrella. This allows the government worker to get to know and better understand the groups they are managing.

Border security would be part of the mix in the comprehensive reform to be passed by Congress. And let’s talk categories of people that cause problems under the theme of border security. You can generalize and say anyone not meeting the criteria established in the immigration reform is an illegal alien and can be deported immediately. For now we will talk about the more infamous situations.

Drug smugglers and drugs being imported into our country. I am not going to address this because my ideas are so controversial that saying we need to make marijuana legal is the least controversial part of the program. There are an enormous amount of players involved that would need to be brought into the negotiations and there is too much detail for this post which is already running long. One benefit is the chance for Mexico to develop a larger middle class once the program is fully established. Mexico having a stronger middle-class was one of the selling points of the original NAFTA, yet corporate greed killed that so we need to follow through if this proposal comes to fruition.
What about all the bad guys Mr. President? I agree we need to be tougher. I think if an illegal or even legal immigrant breaks the law they have two choices. Serve full time for the crime as any citizen of the US would or be deported. No plea bargain and no time off for good behavior, they receive max time under the law once found guilty of any crime, then they get sent home. No appeal. If they come back, even without committing another crime, if found would serve twice the adjudicated sentence with no chance to go home until the full sentence is served. This may sound harsh to some, yet this is where the average citizen has a right to feel protected in their homes and in this country. This is the law, no exceptions.

People caught smuggling humans into the country, Smugglers get full prison term and the people smuggled are treated as refugees with immediate determination of their home situation to see if it meets the criteria determined as outlined above. If no crisis in their home country, they are sent home via the same process as refugees who are determined not to be given refugee status anymore.

And in general we build a better tracking system for all people entering our country for their benefit and ours. When their time is up they have “X” amount of time to return home. If they do not return timely, our government can seize assets to pay for their return home. Sounds harsh, but if we want to have a successful immigration policy that allows a vibrant interchange of culture and people we must protect ourselves against people overreaching or taking advantage of the situation. Everyone has time to leave respectfully, but there is a limit. Our government is given their information routinely by employers etc, so there is no excuse or there are penalties for failure to comply.

These are just a few examples of developing a broad immigration reform policy, yes that might sound harsh on the surface, but if managed openly, transparently, and gives people the chance to become permanent residents or work here as wanted or needed we should embrace them being here. It is up to us as citizens to teach and show them our culture and our values in a positive way to make their experience beneficial for the short or long duration.

See Mr. President you can have immigration reform and not spend one dime on a wall that is counter productive to the growth of our nation. Remember for over 400 years that area of the world has been in flux from exploration to the mix of people enjoying life, sharing culture and trade, a moving boundary that is arbitrary at best, and one that for generations actually means nothing because it is all family.  Maybe it is only important to decide the most basic of necessities, but if you live, work, or play on the Southwest border you know how wonderful this part of the world can be if you treat the area and all the people with respect. Problems can be solved if you define and identify the problem and leave what works alone.

Cheers.

Victims, victims and more victims

Are we a blame the victim society? Are we victims of our own creation?

Regular readers may be frustrated with my many titles as to why I chose a title and what has it to do with what is written. Sometimes I do try to tie it all together somewhere in the post, sometimes I leave it be.

So tonight, I am not sure. I do not want this to be about victims, but every where I go this New Year’s I am reminded about victims.

There are the federal workers who aren’t working, there is a scathing documentary about R. Kelly, there are victims in general about sexual violence etc…, there are the millions of taxpayers who may not receive a refund right away, there are the people reliant on government services, there are victims of all sorts of scams, there are immigrants, illegal immigrants, and refugees, there is a President, and it seems someone is a victim somewhere. Yet this isn’t about them, but all about them.

Who are victims?  What are victims?  God only knows.

I may play a pop psychologist every now and then in this blog, so do I have answers? Well with the New Year we have all sorts of pop psychology books telling us how we can be a better we. Books to make us bad asses, books to lose weight, books with better ways to lose weight, books recycled to tell us how to make friends and impress people, books to sell better, books to feel better, books to help us manage our finances, books on how to win the lottery and make millions, and the list goes on so 2019 can be our year. Otherwise we are a victim of not carpe annum.

In our society we worship the strong and abhor the weak. The weak are failures, the strong rule the day and the most successful. In Christianity though the meek inherit the Earth, the first come last and the last come first. How can we say our society is based on Christianity and yet live completely the opposite?

Here is an article:

I do not agree with much of what it says, and it really is not talking about victims, or is it? Is our political system a victim to this author’s point? He doesn’t say so, but with the way things have been coming at me, I read that idea into this article. And I think he has it wrong in that our body politic is sick. The problem is we are not participants. The vast majority of this country is not obsessed with 4-year political cycles. The vast majority is hurt by this process, but some of that is our fault. I always say a Democracy needs participation and if you let others participate for you, well there you are, stuck. (On a side note, I do have some ideas to at least procedurally alleviate some of the author’s concerns about why we have this sick body politic, there have been previous posts that have discussed this in some shape form or fashion and I will write more on the specific subject soon.  And yes, the dreaded phrase campaign reform is involved)

And that seems to be the problem with victims. We are not participating. We accept myths and half-truths, so we can go about our business. Dealing with a victim takes work and involvement. It means a sacrifice needs to be made to right whatever wrong caused there to be a victim. Victims aren’t bad, they shouldn’t exist. We create many of them by ignoring what is wrong. And we treat the victim as the problem. Again, am I being a pop psychologist? Yes, to an extent. Everyone somewhere even those not well read know at some level there is some truth to what I am saying.

Epiphany was last Sunday; this post should not be one. The issue is participation. And you talk to people and they know the answer. People will say I need to get more involved. Yet where are we? Are we victims of our own laziness and procrastination. I could make a case for myself here.

When I first started this blog in the introduction, I said I would not talk negatively and instead try to find positive solutions. (Ha ha ha, it was the best of intentions, it was the worst of intentions.) And for our victim filled world that is hard to achieve. The answer is simple. Actually, achieving a world without victims seems impossible.

We should not delineate between strong and weak, first and last in the secular world, success and failure because all this is fleeting. We should focus on the lasting, what comes tomorrow, yet we do not.  So, for the positive, the New Year book for becoming a better person, to quit blaming the victim, is all you have to do is participate?

Back to the article, many Americans do care, they feel powerless to get involved so they do not. Or they are too busy, frazzled, confused, lied to, lost, have other interests and more importantly other tasks to accomplish, to do lists to complete, chores, organizations that require time, we fill up our time to avoid doing what is better for ourselves and hence better for others. We may think we are doing better for others by volunteering or giving or joining a group, and yes many do for others, but think about the phrase you hear especially in volunteer work, 10% do 90% of the work. And brother I feel your pain, but most of the time I am the other 90% doing 10% of the work.  So, is the key where you participate? Guess what, it doesn’t matter as long as you participate (well no criminal participation or hate filled participation).

You read me repeatedly say we need new political parties, but what have I done? Oh yeah sure, done some research, know some laws, rant and rave, every now and then I write a public policy idea, but what have I done? I want to do better, but even with all the make me a better person books on the market, what am I doing? Am I a victim of my own undoing? Of course not. I do create victims though by not doing. (And one thing I hate is people who think they are strong demeaning others who try to care, there is some real weakness buddy)

We whine about victims and praise the false gods of success then complain that we were cheated or mistreated when we do not reach hyperbolic heights. Talents can bring us success, but they do not make us different or better than others, we just did better with what we have. Success can be celebrated, but victims shouldn’t be blamed for their failure because the failure is us not succeeding for the whole. We should strive for the simple of not mistreating someone because they are human and always be there for others when we are successful. It sounds so damn simple, but………
